Checklist for Outer Envelopes

How to Save $19/M and More

by Dick Goldsmith

1) Make sure that the Bar Code Clear Zone is clear. That's the bottom right corner of the envelope. It is 4-3/4" X 5/8". You can have solid colors there but the color and the density is important. One customer of ours changed a solid blue front to one that graduated from 100% at the top of the envelope to 20% at the bottom. That was okay. Other colors are okay. Always check with the Post Office and have them sign off on your design.

2) The bar code must show through the window no matter where it slides to. You can help this happen in several ways. Use a bigger address piece (typically the order form). This might be expensive if it throws off the press fit. If that's the case try using a smaller envelope. How about a #9 instead of a #10. Use a bigger window.

3) Make sure that the background color behind the address is not too dark. Check with the post office.

4) Make sure that you have a return address on an envelope that uses a Universal, or Company, indicia.

5) Make sure that printed permit information is correct and up to date.

6) If mailing 1st class and doing any presorts, the indicia must say presort.

7) If you are using a covered window, you can't bleed into it unless you print flat and convert or print flexo and convert.

8) If you will be using stamps, be sure to have the envelope manufactured with the proper glue line.

9) If you're mailing overseas, check if the envelope needs to say "Printed Matter".

10) If you're using a textured stock like a Laid Finish, decide how you want the pattern to be positioned. A diagonal seam envelope with straight laid lines will waste a lot of paper. Try a booklet style or accept a random pattern to save money.
